As a personal reminder, and possibly helpful for other people, I’d thought I’d post what software I spend hours installing after hours of installing Windows XP.

Security

• Spybot S&D – Cleans out spy and malware
• Avast! Anti virus – Free, and good(?)
• Avira Anti virus – Free, and good(?). Has a annoying screen popping up each time it updates though.

Development

• Eclipse – My IDE of choice, for Java at least.
• VIM – easy, slick text editor.
• PuTTY – SSH/Telnet connectivity.
• Java – of course.
• TortoiseSVN – Subversion client integrated in Windows shell
• ArgoUML – Open Source UML diagram editor, can also generate code skeletons

Surfing/Net

Only one(I use GMail, Reader and Calendar from Google for other net stuff.)

• Firefox

General purpose

• WinSCP – SSH/SCP file transfer.
• 7-Zip – Open Source file (de)compressor.
• WinRAR – file (de)compressor, I still use although 7-Zip takes them all..
• Launchy – cool utility that lets you launch apps. by keystrokes.
• SyncToy – A nice, and free, utility from Microsoft that let you do backups/syncs of files and folder. E.g. between disks.

Multimedia

• VLC – Open Source multimedia player, plays most formats.
• foobar2000 – Free and simple mp3/aac/ogg/etc player with low low mem. usage
